THE SCOTTISH Borders Hillwalking Club walk on Sunday, June 10 started at Cocklawfoot, having driven deep into the Cheviot Hills.

We set off in bright sunny weather, initially skirting Round Knowe and climbing gradually upwards over Kelsocleuch Rig and Windy Rig.

The views were stunning the weather was hot and there was no wind.

Onward and upward we stopped to look at a memorial to a pilot whose plane had crashed on the side of the hill.

We soon reached the top of Windy Gyle and still no wind!

The ten walkers stopped for a photo by Russell’s cairn before leaving the Pennine Way and heading down the other side of the ridge bound for Barrowburn.

A brief stop for refreshments at Murder Cleuch and we were off again. By now the sky was dark grey and rumbles of thunder could be heard.

Within minutes, torrential rain cooled us down very quickly and waterproof jackets were donned.

There was no time to admire the glorious wild flowers on the slopes into the valley.

On arrival at Barrowburn, we were dripping wet and flying insects joined us for our lunch stop.

After lunch it was best foot forward up over Middle Hill and skirting Hazely Law to cross back over the Pennine Way.

The final section of the walk was a gentle coast down Clennel Street and over Cocklaw.

The rain had stopped and we had good views.

On arrival back at Cocklawfoot it was dry underfoot and we had covered 13 miles.

It was a good day out.

The B group followed the same route up to Windy Gyle and then walked along the Pennine Way before returning to Cocklawfoot.

Another good day out was had.

The next club walk will be on Sunday, June 24 from Craster to Bamburgh (81) & (75) bus from Bamburgh 9.30am.

Meet at council car park Newtown St Boswells at 8am for lift sharing.
