EXCITEMENT is building in Galashiels as the town gets set for the Braw Lads’ Gathering.

Braw Lad Greg Kelly and Braw Lass Kimberley O’May are leading this year’s festivities, with the big week getting under way on Monday, June 25.

The pair have already taken part in two Ride Outs so far – Spurs Night and Threepwood.

And there is plenty more to come, with the traditional events taking place over the next week.

Friday, June 22

  • SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCE – at the Volunteer Hall. 7.30pm-11pm. Tickets are £7 and are available at the door. Spectators welcome, £3.

Saturday, June 23

  • SCHOOLCHILDREN’S DISCO – at the Volunteer Hall. Primary 1 and 2 11.30am. Primary 3,4 and 5, 1pm.
  • BRAW LADS’ BALL – at Galashiels Academy. 7pm. (Sold out).

Sunday, June 24

  • SPORTS DAY – at Netherdale. First event takes place at 10am. Schoolchildren’s sports, touch rugby, football fives, potted sports, beer tent and outside catering, free mini fun fair, flower parade, pony rides and many other attractions including Ex Service Pipe Band and Galashiels Town Band.   • From 12noon until 4pm a shuttle bus will run every half and hour, stopping at Wood Street, Galashiels Interchange, Langlee middle bus stop and Netherdale.
  • KIRKING OF THE BRAW LAD AND BRAW LASS – at St Paul’s Church 11.30am.

Monday, June 25

  • LINDEAN RIDE OUT – Leaving Netherdale car park at 6pm, arriving back in Galashiels town centre at approximately 9.30pm.
  • RIDER’S SOCIAL – at Quins Restaurant. Starting at around 10pm. Entertainment by Gary Cleghorn.

Tuesday, June 26

  • ANNUAL DINNER – at the Volunteer Hall. 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets cost £25. Call 01896 753803 for more details.

Wednesday, June 27

  • CEREMONIAL RIDE TO TORWOODLEE – leaving Netherdale car park at 5.45pm arriving back in the town centre at 8.15pm.
  • FANCY DRESS PARADE – Scott Park at 6.45pm. Parade is at 7.15pm.
  • CARNIVAL DANCE – at the Volunteer Hall at 10pm. Tickets are £7 and are available on the door. Admission by ticket only. *Please note: over 18s only.

Thursday, June 28

  • CIVIC RECEPTION FOR OVERSEAS GUESTS – at the Volunteer Hall. For further details contact Hazel Hunter on 01896 757888.

Friday, June 29

  • INVESTITURE CONCERT – at the Volunteer Hall. 7.30pm-9.30pm. Entry by donation. Braw Lad and Braw Lass Invested with the Official Sashes. Ex Braw Lads’ and Lasses Choir and local artists.

Saturday, June 30

  • BRAW LADS’ DAY – The Braw Lad will receive the Burgh flag at 8am; the Raid Stane Ceremony will follow at 8.40am; Fording the Tweed at Galafoot is at 9am.
  • The visit to Abbotsford is at 9.15am.
  • Fording the Tweed at Boleside is at 9.45am.
  • The Gallop over Gala Hill is at 10am; the Old Town Cross Ceremony is at 10.30am.
  • The visit to Old Gala House follows at 11am.
  • At 11.30am, the cavalcade will leave Scott Park and go through Scott Street, Gala Park, Kirk Brae, Hall Street, Island Street, High street, Channel Street and Market Street – the dipping of the flag at the war memorial is at midday.
  • At 7.50pm the march of the Principals and Ex-Principals from Bank Street to the War Memorial will take place. And at 8pm the Roses Ceremony will be held.
  • FINAL FLING – at the Volunteer Hall. Starting at 9pm (no admission after 10.30pm). Music by Back Green. Tickets £10 (limited to £4 per person). For more details 01896 754245.
