POLICE are still trying to trace the vandal who spray-painted Selkirk War Memorial just hours before a commemorative service took place.

Furious ex-soldiers and community leaders in the town discovered the damage during the early hours of Friday, June 15 - less than four hours before the emotional Common Riding wreath-laying ceremony.

The graffiti - which referred to drug dealing - was partially cleaned off with the remaining paint covered up by black boot polish.

Similar graffiti was also spray-painted on buildings and landmarks in other areas of the town during the early hours of the same morning.

Despite extensive investigations by police and appeals by community leaders the vandal has yet to be caught.

Police Scotland confirmed that no charges have yet been brought.

The spokesman said: "We are still investigating after graffiti was discovered on the town's War Memorial and other locations in the town on Friday, June 15."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 387 of June 15.
