IT was a day to remember in Lauder on Saturday.

Locals and visitors alike lined the streets to witness the biggest day on the town’s calendar – Common Riding Day.

And the leading the 275-strong mounted cavalcade this year was Cornet Chris Rogerson and Cornet’s Lass Caitlin Megahy.

The big day began at 7am with the Cornet’s march from the Lauderdale Hotel to the Town Hall, led by the Selkirk Silver Band.

And an hour later Cornet and Standard Bearer Rogerson was presented with the Burgh Standard, by Lady Busser Mrs Beth Middlemiss.

The cavalcade then made the traditional trip to the Waterin’ Stane and the war memorial, where the wreath was presented to the Cornet by Miss Ellyn Wilkinson.

The group then returned to the Town Hall for the Conclusion of the Ceremonies.

And the day was rounded off with the ‘Gig on the Rig’ in the Public Park, before the Common Riding Ball and the Grand March.

And it was a special day for 21-year-old Chris who was full of pride and couldn’t stop smiling throughout the week.

He told the Border Telegraph: “It was unbelievable.

“I honestly can’t put it into words how it felt, leading the cavalcade around the town on Saturday.

“There was lots of ex-Cornets there and all of them wished they had the chance to give it another shot.

“I have got some wonderful memories.

“I wouldn’t change it for the world.

“It was really special to see so many people to turn out on horses and on foot to cheer us on from the sidelines.

“Collecting the Burgh Standard in the morning is something I will never forget.

“And I will never forget galloping over the hill and looking over my shoulder to see my house.

“It was a proud and special moment.”
