TWO sidecar racers from Lauder remain in hospital following a horror crash at the weekend.

Stephen Kershaw and Robin Wilson were competing in the eighth and final round of this year's Scottish Championship at Knockhill Racing Circuit on Sunday.

The duo were in pole position to land the coveted title with wins in the earlier rounds over the summer.

But on Sunday they were involved in a serious crash after their sidecar suffered an electrical fault.

Both were rushed to nearby Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Mr Kershaw has been competing in sidecar racing for a decade. The 28-year-old driver fractured a vertebrae in his back as well as breaking several bones in his hand.

And his 48-year-old sidecar passenger, Mr Wilson, is understood to remain in a critical condition with lower body paralysis.

In a statement from Kershaw Racing, the families of both men thanked the medical staff and marshals at the race track.

It said: "We would like to thank all of the medical staff and marshals at Knockhill for their swift and excellent support, and everyone else at the circuit who helped the team.

"Kershaw Racing can confirm that due to an electrical failure the boys were involved in a serious crash.

"Both were taken to Ninewells Hospital where they are currently receiving further care. We ask that you respect our privacy during these next few difficult weeks."

The Kershaw Racing team had been enjoying their most successful season with wins in the Scottish Championships and podium finishes in the British Championships.

More than 300 fans and friends of the Kershaw Racing team took to social media this week to post their best wishes.

Amongst them was Sasha Stamenkovic ,who said: "We are praying for a speedy recovery for you both. Loads of love and support going out to the Kershaws and the Wilsons."

And Kate Farrance added: "Stay strong boys! Our thoughts and prayers are heading up your way to you both and your families."
