TRAVEL search site trivago has published its top 20 hotels in the South of Scotland.

And two of the top five are guest houses in Innerleithen.

The Caddon View and Glede Knowe Guest House are ranked at number two and number four respectively in the survey of over 100 hotels across the region.

But topping the chart is the Huntingdon House Hotel in Dumfries.

The trivago Top Hotel Awards are based on an index which aggregates 190 million ratings from over 30 websites.

An algorithm is used to create an impartial score, whether a hotel has 400 or 4000 reviews - resulting in a real mix of accommodation with luxury hotels standing alongside family-run B&Bs.

Huntingdon House, which charges an average of £77 per room, scored 93.69 with runner up Caddon View, which charges an average of £89, on 93.41 and the £82 per night Glede Knowe Guest House on 93.01.

Denise Bartlett from trivago told us: “With the top five accommodation providers classified as B&Bs, the Scottish guest house community is clearly thriving and visitors to the region are satisfied by the service provided.

"Travellers are often looking for a home away from home, which is something that B&Bs, with their friendly, family-run atmosphere, can easily offer.

"The trivago Top Hotel Awards aim to judge all accommodation fairly, whether they are a luxury castle hotel, a family-run B&B or a chain hotel in Dumfries.

"It is really encouraging to see such a range of accommodation, both in terms of price and geographical location, in our top 20.”

Topping the UK chart is the £532-per-night Hotel 41 in London with a score of 96.79.

And the best in Scotland is the Chester Residence, which charges an average room price of £244, with 96.41.

The Home Arms in Eyemouth is third in the chart with Cringletie House in Peebles at number six, the Roxburghe Hotel near Kelso in ninth, and The Tontine Hotel in Peebles at tenth.

Other local hotels to make it into the top 20 are the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel at 18th, Ednam House Hotel in Kelso at 19th, and 20th was The Park Hotel in Peebles.
