A GALASHIELS girl is hoping to bring some relief to Hawick in the wake of the weekend's flooding devastation.

Support worker Selena Shaw started her own crowdfunding appeal on Monday.

The mum-of-one, who now lives in Ancrum, was touched by the scenes of destruction along the banks of the Teviot throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Selena told us: "I feel we need to do something to help.

"So many people will have lost so much over the weekend.

"Even if we can replace some Christmas presents or other items which were ruined by the flood it would be something to help people get back on their feet."

Selena's mum, Shiela, who is from Hawick, helped out with the Red Cross during the devastating Carlisle floods of 2005.

And the care-worker hopes she can do her own bit this time round by raising funds.

Selena's crowd-funding appeal has a target of £800.

She added: "My mum is from Hawick and we still have family and friends in the town - I know they would do the same for us if the floods had ruined our homes.

"I really hope we can reach £800 and maybe even go beyond it."

More than 100 homes and businesses premises in Hawick were damaged by the weekend floods.

Local MSP John Lamont is calling on Scottish Borders Council to make crisis loans available to anyone affected.

Mr Lamont said: “A number of constituents have got in touch with me to say that their insurance policies do not cover them for flood damage. There will be others who haven’t taken out insurance policies.

“Given the devastation that flooding has caused to some properties in Hawick, it is important the Council does all it can to help with the clean-up. Crisis loans would provide some immediate help to residents struggling to get their homes back in order and hopefully mean they can spend Christmas in a warm, water-tight home."
