THE FIRE which erupted in a cluster of stables in Hawick last Friday is being treated as deliberate.

The blaze - at stables in Burnflat Lane, on the town's southern edge - took hold sometime between 12pm and 1.40pm on Friday, May 6.

There were two horses within the stable at the time of the fire however they were rescued in time and unharmed.

In addition, two windows were deliberately smashed at a nearby building and a wall vandalised with pink spray paint.

Police are now investigating the matter and are appealing for the public’s assistance to help trace the person or persons responsible.

Sergeant Shirley Anderson who is based at Selkirk police station said: “It's quite clear from this early stage of inquiry that this fire was started deliberately and I’m today appealing to anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour in the area to please contact us immediately.

“This could have been a far more serious incident however no animals or people were harmed.

“A significant amount of damage has been caused and we will work tirelessly to trace whoever is responsible.

“Anyone with information relevant to this incident or who was in the area around the time should contact police on 101. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
