MOTORISTS are being reminded that many roads in the western Borders will be closed at some point during Sunday.

Around 2,500 cyclists will descend on Peebles for the country's largest closed-road sportive.

The Tesco Bank Tour O' the Borders generates a welcome financial boost for the area.

But it also leads to disruption for drivers as many roads will be closed from around breakfast time until early afternoon.

A spokesman for the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders said: "The event will be held on closed roads, which will allow cyclists to enjoy their ride in safety.

"Rigorous event planning is conducted through Scottish Borders Council’s Safety Advisory Group, which includes Police and all the emergency services.

"We do appreciate that this event can cause inconvenience to local communities and for this we apologise."

This year Peebles High Street won't be closed but there will be traffic restrictions over Tweed Bridge from 6.10am onwards.

Both Springhill Road and Springwood Road, between 6.10am and 9.30am, will be closed.

Bonnington Road and Kingsmeadows Road will also be closed during the same time period.

And Kingsmeadows Road will only have local access between 9.45am and 3.35pm.

The spokesman added: "Whilst travel times will be affected, access will be maintained across the Tweed Bridge and Cardrona Bridge throughout the day. There will be no closures north of Peebles High Street.

"We understand the impact of closed roads and appreciate the patience and understanding of all those affected."

Beyond Peebles many rural roads will also be affected by the event.

From 6.10am the back road from Peebles over to Manor as well as a section of the A72 to Lyne Station will be closed for more than three hours.

The B712 past Stobo and Dawyck will be closed between 6.40am and 10am.

And the closed signs will come up on the A701 from Tweedsmuir to just before Broughton from 6.40am to 11am.

The Talla Reservoir road between the A701 and the A708 will be closed from 7.25am through until noon.

From 7.45am the A708 between St Mary's Loch and the Gordon Arms will be closed.

And the top and bottom swires over to Ettrick, as well as the section of the Ettrick Valley between Crosslee and Ettrickbridge will also be shut at various times between 7.45am and 1.25pm.

As the Tour O the Borders returns to Tweeddale the B709 over to Traquair from the Gordon Arms will be closed between 8.45am and 2.30pm, with access for residents allowed up to 8.45am.

The back road between Traquair and Cardrona will also be closed from 9.25am to 3pm, and the Cardrona to Peebles section closed between 9.45am and 3.25pm.
