Amey has this week been announced by Transport Scotland as the successful bidder to manage all the motorway and trunk routes through central Scotland, the Lothians and the Borders, including the Edinburgh city bypass and the M8 linking Glasgow with the capital.

The firm’s brief includes all the region’s trunk roads – including the A68, A1, A7 south of Galashiels and the A6091 Melrose by-pass. The contract, worth £92 million, was previously operated by BEAR Scotland.

“As a business, we recognise the importance of delivering a well-functioning road network to support the local economy and achieve the country’s future growth aspirations,” said Amey chief executive Mel Ewell.

In addition to designing and delivering road and bridge maintenance work, the firm will carry out inspections to ensure all routes remain safe. Amey, which has held a similar contract for south west Scotland for the past 12 years, will also be responsible for salting and snow clearing on the trunk road network.
