Better Together enjoyed the majority of support in all but four local authority areas of Scotland.

But it was in the Borderlands where the strongest support for the Union remained.

More than two-thirds of Borderers who voted - 55,553 - put their cross beside No.

A total of 27,906 (33 per cent) sided with the Yes campaign.

Counting Officer Tracey Logan announced the result just before 5am.

She said: ā€œI was really pleased with how the count went in Kelso.

"On such an historic occasion our staff ensured an efficient and effective count was carried out and Iā€™d like to thank them all for their commitment and effort.ā€ The turnout for the Scottish Borders was a staggering 87.4 per cent - 83,526 voters returning a ballot paper from a total registered electorate in the Scottish Borders of 95,542.

A total of 67 votes were rejected for a number of reasons, including - 0 did not bear the official mark on the ballot paper; 11 voted in favour of both answers; one included writing or a mark by which the voter could be identified and 55 were unmarked or void for uncertainty.
