Hospitality clubrooms belonging to Gala Fairydean Rovers were torched during the attack in the early hours of this (Tuesday) morning.

Dozens of historic photographs charting the history of both Gala Fairydean and Gala Rovers were destroyed in the blaze.

Around 30 pennants handed over by visiting teams and more than £1,000 worth of club merchandise were also damaged.

Hundreds of pounds worth of equipment and furnishings have also been lost.

A spokesman for Gala Fairydean Rovers told the Border Telegraph: “A lot of work went into compiling the photographs and other memorabilia - it is a sad day for the club.

“We would appeal for anyone who has information to contact the police.” It is understood debris from the clubrooms, including broken glass, was scattered across the 3G pitch.

And operators Borders Sport and Leisure have confirmed that the facility will remain closed until further notice while the police investigation and clean-up continues.

A spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that there was a fire at the 3G Arena during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“We are thankful that nobody was injured but we are devastated at the damage.

“The facility is now closed and will remain closed until it is safe to re-open.” A fire crew from Galashiels was called to Netherdale at 4.58am and remained on scene until just before 6.30am.

Police have confirmed they are treating the fire as suspicious and they have also received calls regarding other acts of vandalism around the Heriot-Watt/Borders College campus.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Our investigations are ongoing. If anyone saw anything suspicious we would ask they come forward.” Police Scotland can be contacted on 101.
