SCOTTISH Borders Walking Festival is preparing to celebrate its 21st birthday this year.

And organisers are planning to make it a party to remember.

This year’s event is being held in Galashiels from September 6 to 12 - to coincide with the return of rail travel to the region.

The town’s Community Council, with support from the Rotary Club, is hosting the festival, with registration taking place at the Focus Centre in Livingston Place.

But everyone - from all over the Borders and beyond - is invited.

From Oxton and Traquair to Galashiels, the Meigle Hill Circular, Ettrickhead horseshoe, The Two Towers, Blackhaugh to Stow, Eildons and Neidpath Hills; the walks on offer will cover a range of distances and grades from just two miles and easy up to 14 miles and strenuous.

And a series of social events is being organised to complement the packed programme.

However, festival organisers, who met at Gala Policies to map out their proposals this week, have appealed for more walk leaders to help.

Community councillor Tracey Alder said: “This year will be the 21st Scottish Borders Walking Festival and so Galashiels Community Council want to make it one to remember. The organising is well under way and we have a great Committee who are working hard in various groups to make this a super event.

“The event will be launched with a Welcome Ceremony on Saturday, September 5, and walks will take place from Sunday, September 6, to Saturday, September 12, inclusive.

“We have a full social event calendar just being finalised too and there will be something for everyone after each walking day during the week.” But she added: “At the moment we are looking for extra experienced Walk Leaders who would be available on a voluntary basis to spare some time to lead walking groups during the week of the Festival.” Anyone interested in leading a walk should call Rick Kenney on 07801 793349 or email: rickkenney@btinternet.com.
