A RETIRED history teacher from Melrose has been awarded an MBE for his voluntary work in neighbouring East Lothian.

Stephen Bunyan visited Buckingham Palace earlier this month to be invested as a Member of The Order of the British Empire by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal.

Mr Bunyan, who was born at Old Melrose and spent his childhood in Newstead, was educated at Merlose Grammar and Galashiels Academy.

After completing his national service in Plymouth, he graduated in 1957 from Edinburgh University with a degree in history.

Mr Bunyan taught history at both Hawick High and Galashiels Academy before moving to Dunbar in 1966.

He was deputy Commandant of Lothians Battalion of the Army Cadet Force from 1991, and continued in that appointment when it amalgamated with the Borders Battalion the following year.

He retired from the ACF in 2000.

Mr Bunyan was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of East Lothian in 1997.

He was awarded an OBE for Voluntary Service In East Lothian.
