STUDENTS and staff at Borders College are raising awareness of Fairtrade produce as part of 'Fairtrade Fortnight’, which runs until Sunday, March 8. They are holding a number of events on their Campuses in Galashiels, Hawick and Newtown St Boswells.

The Catering and Hospitality students have devised a special Fairtrade Menu for “The Restaurant”, this menu will be on offer to dinners during Fairtrade Fortnight and will featuring such mouth-watering treats as: Lamb Tagine with Fairtrade Mango and Apricots and Fairtrade Chocolate Torte with Chantilly Cream. Two “Smoothie Bikes” have been set up to promote Fairtrade products as well as promoting healthy eating and exercise.

“The bikes are great fun; you just hop on to the saddle and start pedalling. A minute later, you have a delicious healthy drink!” said Fairtrade organiser Sheila Spence.

A great deal of fresh Fairtrade fruit, yoghurt and orange juice has been donated thanks to the generosity of local stores, Sainsbury Kelso and Peebles, The Co-operative Newtown St Boswells and Selkirk, Morrison’s Hawick, Asda Galashiels and W & A Williamson of Melrose, enabling all College students, on all campuses, the opportunity to give the “Smoothie Bikes” a try.”
