THE Borders Railway team helped Breast Cancer Care to kick cancer into touch as the official charity partner of this year’s Melrose 7s tournament.

A scrum of fans offered generous donations in return for Borders Railway branded mini rugby balls.

Just over £2.600 was raised for the charity throughout the tournament, including funds raised by the Borders Railway team.

2015 was the third year that the Borders Railway project sponsored the tournament. The team attended this year’s event to encourage fans to use the train service once the new line opens in September 2015.

Craig Bowman, senior communications manager, Network Rail, said: “We had another fantastic day at this year’s Melrose 7s. It was great to hear everyone’s excitement about the new line and the fact that people will be able to travel to Tweedbank to get to next year’s tournament.

“We were pleased to be able to raise funds for such a good cause and thank everyone for their support on the day.” The new Borders Railway route will begin running on September 6. Tickets can be purchased via National Rail Enquiries 12 weeks in advance of travel.
