MSPs on the Scottish Parliament’s Infrastructure and Capital Investment Committee today visited the new Borders Railway and were given the opportunity to see what passengers can expect when the line opens in September.

The route from Newcraighall to Tweedbank is the longest domestic railway to be constructed in the UK for over 100 years.

Convener of the Committee, Jim Eadie MSP said: “Our Committee understands how important it is for public transport to be convenient, flexible and above all for it to meet the needs of its customers. “The reintroduction of this route after 40 years will result in the Borders being significantly better connected to the Central Belt. “We are delighted to be able to view what is clearly a huge engineering achievement and which will be a significant asset to the area.” MSPs on the Committee undertook the 30 mile rail journey from Tweedbank to Newcraighall.

Hugh Wark, Network Rail’s Project Director for Borders Railway, said: “We’re now nearing the end of construction but the real story is just beginning. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to get an early preview of this railway journey and to share that with committee members today. I look forward to seeing passengers travelling on the route and enjoying everything that this railway and the region as a whole has to offer.”
