POLICE have today issued an image of the pink pills that are believed to be responsible for the hospitalisation of a number of young people in the Hawick area.

Since last Tuesday (Aug 18), 10 people have been taken to the Borders General Hospital after displaying signs of severe sedation. All have since been treated by medics and discharged.

Tests are still being carried out in an effort to identify the pink pill, which is around the size of a pea, and police are urging members of the public to be vigilant and to avoid taking the drug.

Police enquiries into this matter continue.

Detective Inspector Steven Bertram of Police Scotland, said: "In the interest of public safety we have today issued an image of this as yet unidentified substance.

"There may be more of these pills in circulation in the Hawick area, and possibly even farther afield, and I would ask people to please be vigilant and to contact police if you are offered this pill or have information relevant to our ongoing enquiries.

"Likewise, anyone who has consumed this pill and who feels unwell, or knows anyone who appears unwell after taking the substance is asked to please seek medical attention as soon as possible."

Those with information can contact police on 101 or, alternatively through the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
