Girl, 8, helped drunk woman home
AN eight-year-old girl was seen helping a drunk woman home. But when neighbours called the police, she told them she had been in bed for four hours in an attempt to cover up for her drunken antics.
Thirty-seven-year-old Jane Geurts admitted being drunk while in charge of a child when she appeared at the Justice of the Peace Court of the Scottish Borders in Selkirk on Thursday.
She was spotted staggering outside her home in the town's Scott Crescent on November 4 last year.
Procurator Fiscal Jenny Linehan said: "It was the officers opinion that the accused was not fit to care for the child that night."
Geurts' solicitor Matt Patrick admitted his client had been drinking but claimed she had also taken a mixture of pain killers and sleeping tablets which had affected her behaviour.
Justice of the Peace John Burns deferred sentence on Geurts for six months to give her a chance to prove she can stay out of trouble. And, meantime, ordered her to seek help for her alcohol addiction.
