THIS colourful bunch of characters are helping to brighten up Galashiels this summer.

Local residents Johnny Gray, Kenny Hay, Jim Pate, Jim Riddle and Drew Tulley have volunteered to spruce up the glorious gardens at Old Gala House.

It followed the decision by cash-strapped council chiefs to cut back on maintenance of the floral displays across the Borders.

A group of volunteers from Galashiels Rotary, Horticultural Society and Gala Rugby Club have volunteered to help with the maintenance of the grounds at Old Gala House.

And they have appealed for new volunteers to dig in and join them.

Johnny Gray, a member of Gala in Bloom, said: "The council advised the Gala in Bloom committee some months back that proposed cuts to the floral displays affected every town in the Borders.

"And, in Galashiels, we agreed to certain adjustments to Bank Street Gardens and Old Gala House which would have been much greater had we not volunteered to carry out the ground maintenance at Old Gala House." Anyone interested in lending a hand with some weeding and watering on Thursday mornings between 9am and 12noon can contact Johnny Gray by calling 01896 753785.
