A MOTORIST who almost caused a head-on smash has been banned from the road for five months and fined £1,000 at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Fifty nine year old David Christian overtook two cars in a silver Porsche on the A6105 Duns to Chirnside road only to be met by a car emerge from a dip in the road coming from the opposite direction.

The other vehicle's driver took evasive action and mounted an embankment and the wing mirrors of both cars collided with each other.

Christian, from Berwick-upon-Tweed and who runs a property letting business, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving. His lawyer admitted it was a "poorly executed overtaking manoeuvre." Sheriff Derrick McIntyre said: "It seems to be it was a deliberate manoeuvre by you to overtake and it could have had catastrophic consequences if the other driver had not pulled over."
