ANDY Murray is a hero to many – but few ever the get the chance to meet him, let alone play alongside him.

But now Earlston teenager Sammy Kerr can consider herself among that privileged group as she took to the court with the three-time Grand Slam champion at Andy Murray Live.

Sammy enjoyed time on court with Murray, teaming up with the two-time Wimbledon champion in a mixed doubles game against his brother Jamie and mother Judy.

The 17-year-old later enjoyed the main event of the night – Murray versus Roger Federer – from the comfort of courtside seats, as Federer donned a kilt before defeating the Scot 6-3 3-6 10-6.

And while Borders College student Sammy was beset with nerves ahead of her moment in the spotlight, she admits her time on court was a memory to cherish.

“When I was going onto the court, I was really nervous,” she said.

“But as soon as I got into it, I felt a lot better. It was amazing and very cool.

“I’m so excited to tell all my friends and family about the day. I really want to share the experience with them and show them pictures.

“It’s been a really cool day – it’s been life-changing actually. It’s inspired me to do a lot more with my tennis and try other things.

“It’s shown me that I don’t have to be scared of anything. I was so nervous but it just shows everything will be fine.

“To have my family here has been really supportive, I think they have thoroughly enjoyed the day.”

Sammy was selected from hundreds of tennis enthusiasts who entered SSE’s #TeamUp competition, with entrants required to send in a video of themselves playing keepy-up with a tennis racket and ball for ten seconds.

As well as a doubles match to remember, Sammy and her family enjoyed a hospitality lunch with Murray and Federer before the showcase singles got underway – and there’s no chance she’ll be forgetting her special day in a hurry.

“When I think back to when I did the challenge, I never thought it would bring me here,” she said.

“It was such a simple task but it’s brought me to this amazing experience.

“I’m very grateful to SSE for this, they have given me a life-changing opportunity.”
