A GALASHIELS Squadron Air Cadet was at the double this week.

Sergeant Jack Barnes, who lives in Fairnington, was appointed Lord Lieutenant Cadet for Roxburgh Ettrick & Lauderdale when Lord Lieutenant Captain Gerald Maitland- Carew visited 2180 Squadron earlier this week.

The 17-year-old will also accompany the Lord Lieutenant when the Queen visits the Scottish Borders to open the new Borders Railway Line on September 9.

Jack joined 2180 Squadron in 2012 and is regularly involved in Squadron activities at weekends such as sports, adventurous activities, flying and gliding.

He has won a number of Wing & Regional Blues for rugby and has represented the Squadron, Wing and Region at athletics and cross country.

He recently achieved the highest accolade in rugby when he represented the Corps in a representative match when he was selected to play for the Air Cadets National Rugby Team. Jack was recently invited to help train and select younger cadets interested in rugby at Regional level.

Formerly a pupil at Earlston High School, Jack is about to start a Degree Course in Business Management at Napier University in Edinburgh.

The Galashiels Squadron is now recruiting Cadets and will take part in the Galashiels Doors Open Day on September 19.

The Squadron parades on a Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm.
