OVER 100 people turned out to pay a touching tribute to a teenager found dead in the Borders earlier this year.

Aaliyah Sutherland was only 13 when she passed away at her home in Clovenfords on May 17. Before the tragedy, she had written a list of things she wanted to do before she died– including walking through a McDonald's drive-thru.

Her grieving family discovered the bucket list amongst her possessions. And, over the past couple of months, they have been gradually ticking off each of Aaliyah's wishes.

On Thursday afternoon, family and friends paid tribute to the former Earlston High School pupil at the McDonald's restaurant in Galashiels. The massed ranks of friends and family passed through the drive thru in unison. And, after a short meal together, they released over 100 pink and white balloons in memory of the teenager.

The event raised £132 for children's charity ChildLine. Aaliyah's mum Lisa Bond told the Border Telegraph: “We are blown away with the turnout today. She was a special girl and everyone here has so many fond memories of her.

“Aaliyah wrote a summer bucket list in March and it was all things she wanted to achieve throughout the summer. Walking through a drive thru was one of many things on that list.”

Recalling their time together, Aaliyah's friend Taylor Millikan said: She was great fun. I have so many great memories of sleepovers and spending ridiculous amounts of money on Easter eggs. She loved gymnastics too, and always tried to get her friends involved with that. She was very persistent! We all miss her so much.”

The bucket list also includes challenges such as visiting a place for every letter in the alphabet, going camping, seeing a waterfall, going to France, swimming in the sea, tipping a cow and catching a dragon-fly.

"It's a long list and there's no way she'd have done everything, but we decided we'd try to do as many as we can for her,” said her mum.

"Doing Aaliyah's bucket list keeps her with us in a way - she'll definitely be laughing at some of the things we are doing."

Before the McDonald's walk thru, Lisa and her family and friends had raised almost £2,000 for Childline.

This was via collection at Aaliyah's funeral, a Just Giving page, collection boxes at the Co-op in Galashiels and the sale of wristbands in Aaliyah's memory.
