A GALASHIELS teenager whose first aid skills saved the lives of her mum and brother has received another national award.

Abi Wardle was named Young First Aid Hero of the Year at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow’s City Hotel of Friday night.

The occasion was the annual awards of St Andrew’s First Aid, Scotland’s leading first aid charity.

Back in March, the 17-year-old hairdressing student at Borders College, was the inaugural winner of the Annie Dow Heroism Award.

It acknowledged Abi’s quick thinking in administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to her mum Lisa, 39, and brother Ben, 15, when both succumbed to cough apnoea and lapsed into unconsciousness at the family home in St Andrews Street, saved their lives.

Since receiving that award, Abi, who learned first aid at a Young Carers course in 2013, has been called into action again to administer life-saving CPR to her aunt in Livingston, who lost consciousness after accidentally taking too many tablets.

Abi is currently on a break from her studies, caring for her father Peter who has lymphoma and is recovering from a recent stem-cell transplant operation.

“I’ve not had much time to think about awards other than to hope other young people are inspired to learn first aid,” Abi told the Border Telegraph.
