A GALASHIELS-based charity which helps young sports stars realise their dreams is opening up for Christmas.

The Rowan Boland Memorial Trust will be hosting a pop-up shop in the former Borders Food Hall on Saturday.

And more than a dozen traders will be on hand to help shoppers find that perfect gift.

A spokesman for the Trust told us: "A series of traders will offer items for sale at the former Market Street deli such as jewellery, glass art, sketch drawings, art, cakes, baby clothing and make up.

"There will also be hot drinks, and cake and bottle stalls on offer."

The Trust was formed following the tragic death of nine-year-old Rowan Boland during cricket practice at Meigle Park.

The youngster was talented at several other sports as well as cricket.

And in his memory the Trust, which was formed by friends and family, has helped others to reach their potential in the sporting arena.

Saturday's pop-up shop is open from 9.30am to 2pm.

Shoppers can also find out more about the Trust when members will be the Galashiels branch of Tesco the following Saturday (December 17).

Amongst the latest promising sportspeople to receive help are showjumpers Duncan and Katy McFadyen and vaulter Akaminta Younger, who all received grants from the charity in October.

Kelso pair Duncan and Katy compete in national competitions across the UK while Akaminta, who also hails from Kelso, has represented Great Britain and was ranked second in the UK at under 14 girls level this summer.

All have expensive travelling costs across the country, as well as other expenses.

Duncan and Katy received £400 each while Akaminta picked up £500.
