STAFF from Langlee Primary opted not to put their feet up during the recent Easter holidays.

Instead, three of them Sandra Russell, Kirsty Moffat and Keith Guthrie, walked the entire length of the St Cuthbert's Way to remember a colleague who died over Christmas.

Dina Grant had been a popular member of staff at the Galashiels primary.

The trio of walkers wanted to raise funds for the Margaret Kerr Unit at the Borders General Hospital where Dina had received care.

And they have so far raised over £1,000.

Teacher Keith told us: "Thanks to the incredible generosity of family, friends, pupils, their parents and other people who have no connection to the school, we have so far managed to raise a total of over £1000 directly for the Margaret Kerr Unit and have cash donations which we will use to create a memorial in the grounds of our new school.

"We would also like to thank the staff of the BGH for the work they do and we continue to think of Dina and her family."

The Langlee trio were joined by several colleagues from the school for the first leg of the walk between Melrose Abbey and Ancrum.

And over the following three days the three endurance walkers made their way over the border into Northumberland before finally reaching Holy Island - and completing a total distance of around 100 kilometres.

Mr Guthrie added: "The last few kilometres along the causeway to Holy Island were amongst the hardest but it gave us time to think of Dina and the warmth, humour and passion for her work she brought to the school, its staff and the pupils with whom she worked.

"Her death was a shock to us all and her enthusiastic personality is missed by all who knew her.

"We would like to thank the group of staff who accompanied us on the first leg and all the people who sent messages of encouragement as well as Mags Richmond, another teacher at the school who walked the same distance whilst on holiday to show her support."
