PLANS to extend Galashiels Academy have been approved.

The single-storey extension will provide two additional classrooms as well as a life-skills area.

The extension will be build on part of a current car park with school bosses looking at creating alternative parking areas elsewhere within the school grounds.

Planning officer Carlos Clarke said: "The extension would be unseen from public view, lower than the existing part to which it would be attached, and of a form and design that would complement the existing building.

"Neighbouring amenity will not be adversely affected in terms of daylight, sunlight, privacy or outlook loss since the extension would be firmly within the footprint of the existing school complex, with no nearby neighbouring properties at risk."

Building work on the new classrooms is expected to commence later this year.
