IT has been practised for millennia in the mystical East.

And its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits have also been recognised closer to home for a century or two.

But now yoga is set for a major, although still calming, expansion in the Scottish Borders.

This weekend the region's first dedicated yoga studio will open in Galashiels.

Experienced yoga teacher Andrea Duffin is behind The Yoga Mill.

She explained: "This project grew from having to look for new premises to rent for my already established children's and adult yoga classes in Galashiels.

"I quickly realised that there was a market for a yoga studio in the Borders.

"More and more, people everywhere are realising the benefits of yoga and other related practices for good physical and mental health.

"Coming from a yoga background and not a business one this seemed like a daunting task to begin with but with the support of everyone around me, including the support and encouragement from the yoga community, not only in the Borders but all over Scotland and beyond, I knew this was the right time for this project."

The Yoga Mill, which is based at Anderson Chambers on Market Street, will gently fling open its doors on Friday evening for a teachers' launch event.

An open day will be held on Saturday from 10am to 4pm for the public to see what's available.

The centre will provide yoga and well-being classes and workshops aimed at helping people with their physical and mental health.

The Yoga Mill has a large bright studio, a library and lunch room, and a shop.

Andrea, who first encountered relaxation techniques when she was 19, added: "There has always been an abundance of wonderful yoga teachers in the Borders and the aim for The Yoga Mill is to bring all that teaching together for the health and wellbeing of the people in the community.”

Following Saturday's open day, Andrea and several other teachers will be hosting taster sessions throughout Sunday.
