DISABILITY footballers in Galashiels are famed for not leaking goals during tournaments.

And on Friday, as the heavens opened, their defending skills came in handy as they saved their training base from flooding.

Torrential rain left many streets in and around the central Borders flooded late on Friday afternoon.

Several buildings were also affected by the freak storms as drains struggled to cope.

As water began leaking into the Queen's Centre, the Gala Fairydean Rovers disability squad quickly ditched their practice session and headed for the sandbag store.

Disability coach Callum Malone told us: "We are proud of the way in which the boys responded to the flood.

"It was they who took the initiative, collected the sandbags, clearing the silt from the drains outside and either bailing with buckets or sweepings out as much water from the reception area as was possible."

Gala Fairydean Rovers disability squad have used the Melrose Road centre as a training base for the past three seasons.

And they had just completed their warm-up when the alarm was sounded.

Water from Melrose Road had overwhelmed the drains and was starting to flood the reception area and changing rooms.

The players and coaches raced to the town's fire station on Abbotsford Road to arm themselves with sandbags.

And over the next hour or so they prevented any further damage to the Queen's Centre by building defence walls and mopping up the reception.

Queen's Leisure Centre attendant Kanchana Reynolds told us: "The football players stayed and helped me with the flooding and even went down to the Fire Brigade to get sand bags.

“If it wasn’t for their help we would have been calling the Fire Brigade, they did an amazing job.

“The water did manage to get into the reception area and the changing rooms but thanks to the football players it didn’t get into the sports hall – we were very lucky.”
