AN action-packed week for Tweedbank’s annual fair gave villagers the chance to enjoy everything from discos to bingo.

The week kicked off with the Chris Doyle Football Festival on May 26, with more than 150 players from P1-P7 from all over the Borders, including Tweedbank Thistle getting involved.

The family disco at the community centre later that day proved a great success as families danced the night away.

The following day saw the return of the Walking Treasure Hunt, and glorious sunshine encouraged many to take a stroll around Tweedbank to hunt for clues.

It was then back to Tweedbank Community Centre for the Gala Braw Lads Party with pizza and hotdogs.

The group introduced this year’s Galashiels Braw Lad Greg Kelly and Lass Kimberley O’May to the Tweedbank Principal Party where they exchanged colours before relaxing in the sun.

Monday and Tuesday saw more than 150 youngsters get their eyes down to win bingo prizes and a teddy bears’ picnic was held in the garden at Tweedbank Community Centre.

Wednesday night was fancy dress night, and the Tweedbank Principals welcomed Melrosian Harry Fletcher and Struan Hutchison.

The party then paraded behind the Gala Ex-Service Pipe Band to the Community Centre for some music and a BBQ held by Tweedbank Thistle.

Thursday and Friday played host to an indoor bowling tournament, where 12 teams of four battled it out, before rounding things off a day later with an afternoon tea, music and dancing.

Saturday was arguably the best day of all, with the grand fruit and flower parade starting at the Community Centre.

Local groups and families arrived armed with flowers for local homes, fruit for the school breakfast club and items for the local foodbank.

They then paraded behind the Melrose Pipe Band whilst the Tweedbank Principal Party was transported by horse and carriage to the primary school.

A fete and fun day followed with many stall holders and community groups getting involved to raise funds.

Convenor Georgina Boggs said: “Thanks must go to Tweedbank Guide Group who provided the teas and coffees for refreshments on Saturday. There was a bar, Tweedbank PTA provided the food for the afternoon with burgers and hotdogs.

“The Model Boat group were on Gunknowe Loch, Live Borders provided some entertaining inflatable and sports fun on the pitches by the playpark.

“We then held the P7 penalty shootout for the Chris Doyle Trophy with our up-and-coming female goalkeeper for Tweedbank Thistle Cara McCutchison doing the honour of getting fired at by some super shots.

“Gala Harriers’ Gerry Moss organised the round the pond race at 3pm superbly and had over 40 runners.

“To finish the day off we drew the grand raffle with first prize being a two-night break for two people and many other prizes.

“The rain couldn’t put a dampener on spirits as the lines of gazebos soon filled with people continuing to enjoy the day.

“People supported late into the afternoon and our live band was asked to play on later for which they were delighted to oblige.

“The Tweedbank Fair Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people, the Principal Party – Lad Addison Bell, Lass Lucy Tait, First Attendants Mateusz Paszkiewcz and Katie Hamilton and Second Attendants Toby Richardson and Lana Rae for handling their duties with great big smiles and gusto for the whole week.

“Thanks also to the parents and family of the Principal Party who have supported their children right from the start and Tweedbank Primary School, and also to all of our sponsors.”

The AGM will take place on Tuesday, November 6, at 7pm at Tweedbank Community Centre.

Next year’s Tweedbank Fair 2019 will take place between Saturday, May 25 and June 1.
