A MAJOR change to the traffic management of the Galashiels Inner Relief Road will be in place from next week (Monday, September 21).
Albert Place and Abbotsford Road will re-open to two-way traffic, so that the junction of Paton Street, Huddersfield Street and Gala Water Bridge can be closed in order to complete the construction of the new roundabout.
During the closure period, Tesco will be accessed via Paton Street, which will be returned to two-way flow and ASDA from the Currie Road side of the Gala Water.
Although the Hill Street junction with Albert Place will remain closed to traffic, access to shops on Hill Street will be retained and customers will be able to reach the shops in Huddersfield Street from Winston Road and the other streets leading from Abbotsford Road.
Work on the new roundabout will progress seven days a week until it is completed. This is being undertaken to minimise the construction time and disruption to the public. The new roundabout is expected to be operational around the start of November 2009.
Members of the public are advised to consider this information and take time in advance to plan their journey routes for Monday morning to avoid the use of the Gala Water Bridge and its junction with Huddersfield Street and Paton Street, to help reduce congestion and frustration on the day.
Scottish Borders Council apologised for the inconvenience.
