LOCAL MSP John Lamont has requested an urgent review of Government policy and a meeting with the Principal of Carnegie College following the news that the College is to close their contact centres in the Borders on December 18.
Staff were notified of the proposed changes last month and will result in the potential loss of 15 jobs across the Borders at Hawick and Galashiels.
John Lamont said "I know that these centres have provided an excellent service to many local residents by helping them with training and finding work. It is therefore unfortunate that the Government have introduced these changes which have made these services no longer viable."
"I know that the College has now started the mandatory 30 day period of consultation for redundancies. Having spoken to a number of the staff, I know how worried they are about what the future holds for them. However, I have requested that the Government carries out an urgent review of this policy so that further consideration can be given to how this is impacting on the Borders."
