QUEEN'S Leisure Centre in Galashiels is to close temporarily for essential works, council chiefs have confirmed.

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has announced the Queens Leisure Centre in Galashiels will be closed temporarily for one week from Friday, December 4, until Friday, December 11.

The closure is essential to allow repairs to be carried out to the heating system in the main sports hall.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Learning, Councillor Graham Garvie, said: "I realise this is very unfortunate, especially when the Centre is continuing to attract an increasing number of people to its activities and classes every week.

"However this temporary closure will be better for everyone in the long run because it means we will not have to close the building for a longer period of time in the new year due to the designated minimum operating temperatures."

Senior Sports Development Officer John McBay added: "We do apologise to everyone affected by this temporary closure and realise it is not ideal. We have written to all current members and advised them that they will have an additional week added to their membership when the centre re-opens."

The centre will re-open for business on Saturday, December 12, at 9.30am.
