PLANS for a new Galashiels petrol station have been unveiled by supermarket giant ASDA.
Bosses at the superstore chain want to erect a self-service station on part of its current car park on Currie Road.
With the town's third filling station on nearby Albert Place closing last year to make way for the new inner relief road, the proposals are being welcomed.
Tracey Alder from Galashiels and Langlee Community Council told us: "At the moment you either have to go out to Wilderhaugh or up to Langlee for petrol so I'm sure there is room for another.
"Most superstores have petrol stations these days and I would welcome it."
Store bosses are looking to develop the section of their car park adjacent to the entrance for the station.
But they will restrict the use of the three-island forecourt to pay-at-the-pumps only.
A spokesman for ASDA said: "The automated operation means there is no requirement for sales kiosks, shops, etc, and there will be no sales other than petrol dispensation.
"The superstructures are therefore limited to the forecourt canopy covering the pumps and a small unit which is located alongside the forecourt, which contains the electronic equipment."
If successful the 2300 square metre station will reduce the number of spaces in the store's car park from 394 to 356.
The spokesman added: "It is considered the proposed station design and automated format represents the most compact and efficient facility with minimal impact on the existing store operations and sits unobtrusively within the existing retail environment."
The full planning application will be considered by Scottish Borders Council over the next few months.

Hope this application gets the go ahead.Only hope that if granted ASDA will discount their fuel to prices they charge in cities.High time people in the Borders had the opportunity to buy fuel at a lower price than we have had to pay for years.f

Great that Asda are finally having a petrol station!! Why card payment only as there are lots of small businesses in the Borders that have vans to refuel via cash?
This is going to limit competiton toward the other two stations in Galashiels that accept cash.
The sooner Tescos have one too the better - (as mentioned above) fuel becomes cheaper from the shopping receipt.
Two Superstores in Galashiels and only one affixed petrol station which is going to be card only??? That's a no brainer...
