TRIBUTES have been paid to the son of Gala Rugby Club coach Dave Boland, who tragically collapsed and died on Monday evening.
Rowan Boland, who suffered from underlying medical problems, died at Meigle Park - the home of Galashiels Cricket Club.
Desperate attempts were made to save the nine-year-old but he was later pronounced dead.
Family, friends and fellow pupils were being comforted yesterday (Tuesday).
And extra support staff had been sent to the Balmoral Avenue primary to council upset classmates.
Headteacher Anne Thomson told the Border Telegraph: "Rowan was a wonderful little boy and was a pleasure to teach. He was a much loved pupil in the school and will be sorely missed."
Yvonne McCracken Head of Schools said: "This is a terrible tragedy and our heartfelt sympathies go out to Rowan's family and friends during this extremely difficult time."
Rowan was a member of Gala Rugby Club's Mini Maroons and was a regular ball boy at Netherdale.
Colin Playfair, president of Gala Rugby Club, said: "This is a terrible tragedy and the family must be devastated. Rowan was often down at training with his dad and we all knew him. Our thoughts are with Ecky and Elaine."

So sorry to hear the sad news. Remember Rowan when he used to come in to Girls' Brigade with his dad to collect his sister. My prayers are with all the family at this sad time.

My whole family are very upset to hear such sad news - particularly my eldest son Lawrence who plays rugby for Gala. Lawrence was very proud when Rowan declared him his favourite Gala player when he was mascot back in December and was very sorry he couldn't play that day and get to share the event with Rowan. All our thoughts are with Rowan's family and friends at this time.
