A FREE parking scheme in Galashiels is to be extended, council chiefs have confirmed this week.

It follows a petition from local businesses concerned that shoppers were bypassing the town centre in favour of edge of town centre supermarkets where parking is free for up to three hours.

However, plans are being put in place to limit the length of time motorists can park in some areas of the town.

A spokesman for Scottish Borders Council said: "There are proposals to introduce a Traffic Regulation Order to limit parking in the new bays in the former A7 in Ladhope Vale and Market Street to one hour as well as increasing waiting time to one hour in all existing 30 minute permitted waiting areas. These existing areas include Bank Street, Bank Street Brae, High Street and Channel Street.

"These changes are being steered by the Galashiels councillors and the Chamber of Trade as part of the overall Galashiels developments programme and are subject to ratification by the Council's Executive."
