ONE of the country's best known writers visited the Borders last week to encourage more children to read.

Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson, whose best known book The Gruffalo has sold over 10 million copies, is pictured with pupils from Tweedbank Primary School at the public library in Galashiels.

She hosted a fun and interactive storytelling session designed to inspire the children and bring the world of books to life.

Julia, who also visited the library in Hawick during the Scottish Friendly Children's Book Tour, said: "I'm always encouraging children to get involved in acting and reading aloud. Kids love participating in storytelling, whether that's acting out parts or singing choruses."

And she added: "These activities can have a massive impact on children's reading skills, so are very important."
