OVER the past few months, Galashiels Inner Wheelers have been busy and quizzy!

Inner Wheel Day was celebrated on January 9; this is a special year as it is the organisation’s 90th Birthday.

This year, club members were invited to bring 90p for 90 years and rolled coins for bottle skittles, celebrating with an informal lunch accompanied by Rotary Members, the proceeds will be placed in out charity fund to be distributed later in the year.

At our meeting on January 21 we welcomed Kathryn Peden from Citizens Advice Bureau who gave a very informative talk on the work of the CAB in Galashiels.

President Rosemary McCosh presented member Susan Moore with a gift and birthday cake (made by a fellow member) on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

Inner Wheel District 2 Chairman, Vi Romanis, from our local club, Galashiels, was challenged to pull together an inter-club District Quiz to represent the 13 Clubs in District 2 covering East Central and Southern Scotland, from Lanarkshire through Edinburgh to the East and down to the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway.

The first of seven heats started with the home team in Galashiels versus near neighbours, Eastern Borders Inner Wheel Club. A wet and windy Saturday afternoon was contrasted by the warm welcome and light-hearted, but well fought quiz. Questions ranged from “Events in 2013” to “inside Inner Wheel”. Unfortunately, Galashiels were well and truly beaten by the visitors, but with a lot of friendly rivalry and banter between the teams – a gracious winning foursome and their supporters were then treated to afternoon tea and cakes supplied by members of Galashiels Inner Wheel, and friendship continued!

After the heats, two of the winning teams will be pulled from a hat to come together as a final battle at the District Rally in June. Next meeting will welcome Moira Shanks, an Inner Wheeler, who with the help of local churches is the co founder of the Food Bank in Galashiels, as the evening’s speaker.
