BROWNIES from Galashiels District celebrated the 100th Birthday of the Brownie movement by inviting the Rainbows, Guides, Senior Section and all the Leaders to their party at the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels on Saturday .

They commenced by playing the Corners game, followed by an old traditional dancing game of 'The Grand old Duke of York’. Next came musical statues, which wasn’t an easy task for the leaders, to pick those who were moving.

Everyone then stopped for some party food and drink. The last game to be played was Pass the Parcel, which was great fun for all ages.

Everybody sang 'Happy Birthday’ before the wonderful cake made by Rainbow Leader Lindsay Stavert and Senior Section member Allanah Fox was cut by Alison Henry, District Commissioner for Galashiels and Brownie Erin Stoddart, whose birthday it was on that day.

During the past term all sections have worked towards the Janet Mackie Memorial Shield competition, with this years theme being 'Easter’. This was judged and shields presented by Pauline Spengler, District Commissioner for Melrose, Newtown and St Boswells.

The prize winners were - Rainbows: Emma Duncanson, 2nd Gala Rainbows. Brownies: Ceilidh Anderson- Hardie, 3rd Gala Brownies.

Guides: Rosie McLeman, 1st Gala Guides. Senior Section: Cara Smith, 1st Tweedbank Senior Section.

Finally Gail Fox, County Commissioner for Tweed Valley, announced that Morag McCormick will be the new District Commissioner for Galashiels for the next three years.

She also presented Alison Henry, the out going District Commissioner with a certificate & badge of thanks, in appreciation of her valuable support for Girlguiding.

Parents were then invited in for the rest of the afternoon to see different activities that all the girls take part in at their weekly meetings, from making an elephant from empty plastic milk cartons, to making balancing parrots.

There were also various stalls around the hall, which people could participate in. On display in the foyer were Brownie and Guide uniforms from the past - thanks to Borders College for loaning the manikins for these.

Also on show were photos of past and present Brownies and Guides in Galashiels.

It was quite a talking point and it is amazing how many people have been in the Guiding movement - so if you feel that you want to give something back to it, please contact www.girlguiding.org.uk
