GRAND National winning jockey Ryan Mania admitted the last three years of his life have been “crazy”.

Since been appointed Braw Lad in 2012, he has become a father and won the most famous horse race in the world.

However, now that his three year term in office is over, he revealed he hopes to return to the spotlight by winning the Aintree race for a record second time.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph inside the Burgh Chambers following the Ceremonial Ride on Saturday, Ryan, who was joined by his son Rowan on his first Gala day, said: “Every year is amazing but this year is more emotional. It’s like the end of an era.

“Since my appointment it’s been crazy. I couldn’t have imagined a more crazy two or three years. From being appointed, to winning the National, to the birth of my son, it’s been incredible.” Ryan, who praised this year’s Principals for the way they carried out their duties, has been supported throughout his reign by 2012 Braw Lass Nicola Mackay. And he revealed they have spent so much time together they now know what each other is thinking.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better Braw Lass, and I mean that. I’m sure every Braw Lad would say that but, genuinely, I couldn’t have asked for better.

“I’ve been so lucky (to have Nicola), from the first moment we met back in 2012 it’s been so easy - we get on so well. We just know what each other is thinking, it’s perfect.

“Everything has went great this year, we’ve gone out with a bang and it’s been brilliant.” But he added: “Now I need to spend more time being completely focussed on my racing. Last year I had the best season I’ve ever had so I need to build on that, get more winners, more rides and win the National again.”
