BUS passengers have been left waiting months, and in all conditions, for a new shelter in an exposed area of Galashiels.

Community councillors requested the stop on the A7, near the Ladhope pub, following a report in the Border Telegraph that one of the country’s most expensive bus shelters had been installed in Tweedbank at a cost of £9000 - despite a shelter already being in place there.

However, at this month’s meeting of Galashiels Community Council, members heard the new stop had been delayed because councillors couldn’t decide where to put it.

Councillor John Mitchell, who represents the area on Scottish Borders Council, said: “It should have been there by now.

“We did look to have it further up the road (High Buckholmside) but it was not feasible.” Nevertheless, he insisted: “It will still happen.” Former Scottish Borders Council leader Drew Tulley had previously asked what would happen to the bus shelters installed at the temporary bus station in Galashiels once the new transport interchange was completed.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “Four of the five bus stops will remain on Stirling Street, and it is still to be decided where the final bus stop will be re-positioned in the Borders.”
