A CEMETERY in Galashiels is being used as a toilet because of a lack of public loos.

Tweedbank Community Council heard of the concerns at the Public Park and neighbouring Eastlands Cemetery while discussing plans to install portable toilets at Gunknowe Loch - which have been sunk by the council.

Members heard the nearby shop had been forced to lock its staff toilet after it, along with the neighbouring restaurant, was inundated with visitors asking to use their toilets.

Meanwhile, it was reported, no more birds have been found dead at the Loch.

Last month, Scottish Borders Council leader David Parker was quick to reassure residents that Gunknowe Loch in Tweedbank does not pose a public health risk after a number of birds were found dead. It follows concerns over the explosion in potentially harmful blue-green algae on the pond, which has been described as an eyesore.

He revealed bochelism or salmonella was suspected for the birds’ death.

However, this month, it was noted an eel had been found dead in the pond. It is believed to have travelled over the park from the nearby River Tweed.

Councillor Parker pointed out sections of the path around the Loch would be closed at various intervals over the next fortnight to allow the roots of trees, which have disturbed the surface, to be excavated before it is retarred.
