THE mother of a three-year-old Galashiels girl who drowned in a hotel swimming pool has been re-bailed by Lancashire Police.

Sarah Bell was arrested on suspicion of murder and child neglect after her daughter, Jane, was pulled from the bottom of a hotel pool in St Annes, near Blackpool, on August 14.

The child died later the same day in Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

A Home Office post-mortem examination revealed the cause of Jane’s death was drowning.

Investigating officers released 40-year-old Mrs Bell on bail the following day after initial questioning.

Det Insp Nick Connaughton, from Blackpool CID, told us at the time that Jane’s death was being treated as unexplained.

He said: “We are treating this tragic incident as an unexplained death and are continuing to investigate just how the child has come into difficulties in the pool.

“Our thoughts remain with the child’s family at this sad time.” Mrs Bell returned home to Galashiels with her husband, David, and was to remain on bail until Saturday, November 15.

It was expected that a decision would have been made by Lancashire Police on bringing charges ahead of her return to Blackpool.

But investigating officers opted to continue with their enquiries until early next year.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is continuing.

“A woman has been re-bailed until February 2 and a decision will be made prior to that date.”
