CHRISTMAS is a time for giving.
But an animal rehoming centre in the Borders is advising anyone shopping for presents against giving a pet for Christmas this year.
Arthurshiel Rescue Centre, near St Boswells, revealed it is inundated with animals given as gifts once the novelty has worn off.
And it warned a pet is for life not just for Christmas.
Instead the charity is inviting Border Telegraph readers to donate pet related goodies - including food, bedding and toys - to a Santa’s Suitcase set up at the Co-operative Travel agents in Channel Street, Galashiels.
All the items collected up to Christmas Eve will be donated to Arthurshiel and give unwanted and abandoned animals a treat over the festive period.
Dora, a rescued Dalmation currently being cared for by the charity, sported a pair of sunglasses to help launch Santa’s Suitcase this week.
Co-op Travel’s assistant manager Amy Turner said: “We wanted to do something different for Christmas this year and we decided to launch a Santa’s Suitcase for the animals because they need Christmas as well as the kiddies do.” Shona Middlemas, who runs Arthurshiel, added: “I think it’s a fantastic idea.”
