A PENSIONER from Galashiels was conned out of thousands of pounds after being targeted by a fraudster in an online computer scam.

Police are warning the public to be vigilant after the 75-year-old woman received a telephone call from a man on Tuesday, December 2, requesting payment for previous work he claimed was carried out on her computer.

He then persuaded the victim to allow him remote access to her computer and removed several thousand pounds from her bank account.

Officers are conducting a number of local enquiries to identify the caller and anyone with information that can assist this investigation is asked to come forward.

Inspector John Scott said: “This is a callous and devious crime targeting people who might be less confident with computers.

“We would urge everyone to be on their guard and should you receive a call of this nature, terminate the call and do not allow the caller any access to your computer or personal information. Never give anyone your password details.

“The matter should then be reported to the police.” Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
