TWO of the biggest budget hotel chains in Britain could be set to play a major role in the revitalisation of the town centre in Galashiels.

Speculation is mounting that Travelodge may be looking to move in to the former Burgh Yard site, off Braw Lads’ Brae, after Scottish Borders Council advertised it as a development opportunity.

Scottish Borders Council confirmed it is in negotiation with a preferred bidder this week.

And, at the other end of town, Premier Inn are rumoured to be interested in moving in to the former Post Office building, which lies empty at the top of Channel Street.

Kevin Murray, Senior Acquisitions Manager at Premier Inn, said: “Galashiels is one of our 'target town’ locations and we would very much like to open a new hotel in the town in the future. “Although we have no specific plans at present, we will continue to explore any suitable and deliverable opportunity that becomes available.” The revelation comes on the same week that the track laying on the region’s new rail line, which includes a new station in Galashiels, is completed.

And it is hoped the national chains could address the area’s shortage of hotel accommodation and attract visitors back into the town centre.
