THE Focus Centre in Galashiels have just purchased a brand new set of New Age Kurling Stones and the Focus Crochet class were the first to try them out.

Community Council secretary Tracey Alder, who runs the Crochet class, said the Kurling Stones are just like the original Curling game but the stones are much smaller and are on wheels, the game has been adapted so that it can be played indoors on any smooth flat surface rather than on ice.

The game can be played by both able-bodied and disabled people of all ages.

It was the idea of Community Councillor and Chair of the Focus Management Committee Judith Cleghorn to get these stones to encourage more business to the Focus Centre and a way of bringing forward a light exercise class.

The Crochet ladies thoroughly enjoyed having their practise session and did get a bit over excited at times but they will be using the stones regularly and may even form a team.

Tracey said: “The ladies are always up for a challenge, it’s been nearly a year since the crochet class was formed which has seen more and more ladies joining, now we have Kurling, what will they do next?” The Galashiels Community Council will be using the Focus as the Registration Centre for the Scottish Borders Walking Festival in September and they have a full social calendar of events, Kurling may be incorporated into the planned Games Evening as it could prove very popular and enjoyable.

The Kurling Stones are available for the use of the Focus Centre user groups by prior booking.
