POLICE in the Borders are appealing for witnesses following a break-in and theft from a business in Hawick.

The incident happened sometime between 5.30 pm on Tuesday, August 30 and 7am on Wednesday August 31 at the Jewsons premises within the Burnfoot Industrial Estate.

Staff at the store returned to find that the building had been entered and a quantity of lead rolls and roofing felt had been stolen.

The total value of the items taken is around £9,000. 

Anyone who can assist officers with their ongoing inquiries is asked to come forward. 

Detective Constable James Harrison from Galashiels CID said: "The quantity of goods stolen would have likely required a vehicle to move them and so we are keen to hear from anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious cars or vans around Jewsons on either Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

"In addition anyone who has any information that can help us identify and locate those responsible is also asked to contact police immediately."
