POLICE have charged two youths following a vandalism attack at Hawick War Memorial.

There was widespread anger earlier this month when a poppy wreath on the steps of the Wilton Park memorial was set on fire.

Following enquiries two boys, aged 12 and 13, have been reported to the Children's Reporter.

Officers believe another youth was involved and are continuing with their enquiries.

Inspector Carol Wood from Hawick Police Station said: "We recognise the distress and anger this incident caused the local community and the public can be reassured that this matter has been investigated robustly.

"While two arrests have been made, we are continuing with our enquiries and if you believe you have any other information relevant to this incident then please contact us immediately."
